For the past eighteen years, my wife, Barbara, and I have been researching my family (MARTELL). Inspired by Barbara's parents who have researched their family roots back to England in the early 1400s, we began our search for the Martel family. I never thought I would get as far back as Jean Martel in St-Eustache, Paris in 1587. We began with a Family Tree Maker tree and then received a handwritten copy of the Martel tree from Stephen White. We were then off and running!! Special thanks to Stephen for being the catalyst and getting us started in the right direction. We then came across the many Nova Scotia internet sites and in particular the ILMADAME Listserve, which has been an invaluable tool in our research. During these past seventeen years, we have received help from many relatives and cousins. In particular, we would like to thank Ed Galvin and George Rose for the McDonald and Bourque branch (my Mother's side) and from Charles Samson and Leo Walter Martell for help on the Martel/ Samson/ Boudreau branch (my Father's side). The Isle Madame Listserv has been wonderful to provide records etc. The original spelling of the name is Martel but over the years has been changed by various Martells to Martelle and Martell. We now have accumulated over 43,000 names, beginning with Jean Martel (b. 1587) through today with our youngest grandchild, Michael Alan Button, Chico, California. Finally, my wife Barbara has recently joined me in retirement and we are spending more of our time continuing research in this wonderful "hobby". Most of our data comes from Nova Scotia and in particular "Isle Madame", where our relatives immigrated to Massachusetts in the late 1800s. We will answer all inquiries as best we can and hope that our cousins will help us correct any errors or omissions. All data has been checked carefully and no guesses have been made, but as most of you know, transcriptions and spellings can be difficult. We are not perfect and welcome any corrections and help.
